Daniela: Evaluation Question 1 Plan

 Rough Plan

Q1. In what ways does your media production use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The following bullet points are ideas that we all came up with as a group in a discussion. I will be the one that will put all these ideas together and write out the evaluation for the first question.

  • We created a teaser trailer, a film poster and magazine front cover (add in illustrations)

  • Talk about the teaser trailer individually and how we have followed some conventions such as the storyline (which is not an original idea as there are plenty films out there that have covered the same theme as us or similar. Such as, The Last Exorcism, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Omen etc. The examples used add 1-3 mini clips. Talk about how we developed the conventions of real media products by not using a bible in the exorcism part which clearly states that it is a bible; instead we made a book ourselves and just added a cross on the front of the small book. Add a picture to show this. The length of our teaser trailer compared to most professional ones out there, which shows that we challenged the conventions. The fact that the main character, Esther, was colored and not white like most of the possessed characters. Challenged convention. Usually exorcisms take place on a bed as seen in The Exorcism of Emily Rose; barns as seen in The last Exorcism. Our Exorcism takes place in a dark room on a rectangular shaped table. Talk about the disadvantage of our teaser trailer mainly following the conventions of real media products - people might get bored of seeing the same thing, almost becomes predictable etc. Talk about the advantage of mainly following the conventions - its been successful in many other horror films, so we tried to imitate it whilst making it our own so that our teaser trailer could also be a success. As well as talking about the denotations of certain features in our teaser trailer such as Esther's face being covered by her hair, talk about the connotations behind this etc etc. Talk about lighting and how it differentiates from lighting's in other horror teaser trailers. Talk about the setting etc etc. Talk about how its set at night time and how we were able to accomplish this and that how exorcisms usually take place at night, so we didn't challenge any conventions. Add movie clips to show  this type of setting. Talk about sound and how it was explored.

  • Talk about the film poster individually and how it uses the priest as the main image (main male character). Talk about the raw image before it was manipulated and where the influence to pose like that came from. Talk about the effects of the pose of the priest. Add in screen shots of the picture whilst it was being manipulated (photo-shop) and add in text boxes explaining the process and the effects that it connotes. How does it use, follow or challenge conventions??........ Talk about how low key lighting is explored, the effects of low key lighting and where else it is apparent it other horror movie poster such as 'One Missed Call' (uses and follows conventions). Talk about how the production company's logo is used at the bottom left hand corner, this is evident in nearly all movie posters. Remember to add in loads of illustrations to back up your point. Talk about the graphology of the poster and the effects and its significance. Search for other posters that use similar fonts and do a cross comparison and how ours is different/ same and why??. Talk about the colors used in the poster and what it implies and how it grabs the audience's attention to go and what the film.
  • Talk about the magazine front cover individually and how its presented as a whole. Talk about the graphology, colors and the positioning of the writings, pictures, bar-codes etc etc. Our movie was featured in 'Empire' magazine, why did we decide to do that instead of creating our own movie magazine?? Does the layout of our magazine have identifiable fingerprints of Empire magazine?? How and why ?? Add in images of real Empire magazines and one which is quite similar to ours Talk about the main picture which is of Esther. Her face is not seen just like in the teaser trailer (only at the end), this style of pose is similar to the poster of the priest where his face is not seen - creates suspense and mystery. How does our magazine front cover reach out to the audience and get their interest. Add in some images of the process of making the magazine for example the masthead, the different texture effects used on the main image. Not too many just some would do. Add in raw picture of Esther before it was manipulated. Talk about costume and how it is very similar to ones used in The Last Exorcism and The Exorcism of Emily Rose - get pictures to show this or even screen shots from the clips of the movie themselves.
