HORROR MAGAZINE FINAL

We used the font 'Times' for all of the cover lines we tried using another font to add variety but ultimately this is what looked best in the end. we used burn tool on the lettering to give it some shadow to make it more 'physical' and part of a whole rather than standing out and hovering over the surface, this also helps place some of the text in the mid ground between the girl and the wall along with overlapping seen in the cover line about Johnny Depp and the tag line under the mast head. The mast head is done much in the same way as the wall by building up opaque layers of texture and using the burn tool to make it look rusted and stained.
We used a number of processes on the image of the girl in Photoshop like filters colour tints and air brushing to give her a unhealthy, unnatural, tone along with burn tool to bring out the shadows in the dress we then created a shadow on the background layer to place her in the picture.

This is the unmanipulated image of the girl.

TEASER TRAILER FINAL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ks8xUXsdrI&feature=related
click above for a larger viewing experience

this is our final product we filmed it on a Canon Eos 7D in high definition and was edited using final cut pro the soundtrack was created using garage band and the text was animated using motion.
we filmed in two locations the first location for any part with the priest in is in front of a blue screen with hardly any light against it which made it appear black. the second location is our teachers studio which we were able to book some time to use during the christmas holidays this had the perfect feel to it the wall was stained and patchy. a few shots from the story board had to be sacrificed because of a lack of time but i think it helped the flow of the trailer during the editing process i think it has a good rhythm, pace and i think it is effective in building up tension for the final shot this is shown in some of the feedback we have received on youtube a few people mentiond that they were surprised by it.

HORROR POSTER FINAL

this is the final poster for devil's orphan. Whilst doing the poster and magazine cover I'v learned many new photoshop skills for instance how to make things look dilapidated and worn such as the text which started as basic Times font which I made look stained by building up opaque layers brush strokes and using the burn tool and textured eraser brushes to make it look scratched. I also used scratched textures for the background to shine through and created the vignette lens effect with the burn tool the cross is one i found on the internet and photoshoped it in  as we didn't have the prop I made before i think it works better having a more ornamental cross for the poster.
i used the burn tool to ad more of a sepia like shadow on my hand and air brushed the highlights on the hat.
the idea for the tagline came to me while making the poster I think it suits the whole concept of or film it has a threatening element to the statement that also ties into the religious themes, so it works on a few levels.
the credits were originally written in 'helvetica' but it just didn't look right i found the actual font used professionally 'steel tongs' which gave it the right look so it doesn't stand out.

the comany logo for 'evolution productions' was created for this poster i had the idea before and looks good when executed.

this is the original image that was manipulated as you can see we used a stand in cross the poster is slightly off balance because i held the cross to the left slightly.

Beatrice: Different Ways Of Possible Promotion

Promoting our teaser trailer is what we have to do effectively to reach our target audience and enable them to acknowledge our trailer. As a group we brainstormed ways in which we could advertise and the only ways we could come up with was word-of-mouth-this would include promoting using print outs like posters. Having discussed this, we realised we would need other forms of promotion and so we did research into this.
The different techniques we found out about were;
  • In Theatres-Poster, Slideshows, Standees
  • Television and Radio
  • Internet-Websites, Viral Marketing
  • Print-Advertisement in Newspapers and Magazines
  • Merchandising
  • Promotional Tour
After looking at this list, we thought that the most effective form of promotion for our group would be to use the Internet, in particular Viral Marketing as we have access to this. The most efficient form of viral marketing that we would use would be Youtube as we would upload our video via this site. With over an estimated 2 Billion viewers a day, our video will be exposed to a wide audience which will generate feedback from a diverse audience which should give us a spectrum of different responses. By including numerous tags, this will in itself help promote the video as these key words will help viewers come across our video easier. We however will not just depend on this chance and so we will use Facebook to also promote the video. By promoting the video on Facebook, this gives us direct contact with the viewers and this will give us a more detailed and specific analysis of our trailer. Because posting links on Facebook are not private, this will also enable other viewers to see the video and also comment their views, which is expanding our audience.

If we didn't lack money as a resource, there would be forms of promotion which would be more effective than the ones which we have used. Promotion on TV and Radio's would go alongside the promotion of our teaser trailer as

Daniela Tome : What Horror Subgenre Does 'Devil's Orphan' Come Under??

When thinking of what sub-genre 'Devils Orphan' comes in, it's not very hard to distinguish as the theme of our film has been widely explored in many different versions of exorcist based horrors. As a group we came to an easy and firm conclusion that our film would come under the sub-genre of supernatural  horror. Our film deals with the unknown, the unexplainable; well to those who are not in a religious faith such as Christianity, hence why a priest carry's out the exorcism in our film.

We have decided to put our movie under the sub-genre of Supernatural  horror as it covers the story of a young girl called Esther who is believed to be possessed by evil demonic spirits. Esther spends the whole day in her room drawing satanic pictures and sticks them on her wall which is overflowed with these masonic symbols and writing. Her parents don't understand why she is not like any other teenager and can not explain the strange stuff that happens in the household when Esther has inhuman outbursts. Her parents eventually look to a priest after seeking help from psychiatrists, doctors, councilors who are unable to find a cause and cure.

Supernatural horrors usually consists out of body experience, unseen evil force,  possession (possessed by malignant or malevolent spirit), ghosts, ancient curses, demons, vampires etc. Sub-genres such as these emerge around pain, agony and anguish. Underneath are some examples of supernatural horror films.

Example 1 Supernatural horror thriller - This is a film trailer of 'The Unborn' which covers the story of a girl who gets haunted by her dead twin brother who is wanting to be reborn so that it can enter the world of the living

Example 2 Supernatural horror - This is a movie trailer of 'The Messenger' which covers the story of a family who move in to a haunted house.

Supernatural horror films are usually dark and sinister, as most Horror films. The intention of horror films is to give the audience a real shocking experience as well as having them at the end of their seats and covering their faces being unable to watch whats going to happen next.

Tamika: Pictures of the process of filming in the studio

Here is Billy setting up the scene using the same props as the first attempt at filming this scene
here is most of the setup we used lights with green filters, tripod and crane we also used a track and dolly
getting the lighting right
focusing camera for crane shot
this shot shows how we marked the focal point where we wanted the track shot finishes and marked it on the actual track with gaffer tape so i could get a physical pointer where to shop tracking

Daniela Tome : Marketing 'Devils Orphan'

Marketing 'Devil's Orphan'
The Four P's
When thinking about how our film will be marketed, elements of the marketing mix which is often referred as the 'Four P's' needs to be taken into consideration.

Product - Is the merchandise that is being sold or being put on the market for consumer use.
Price - The monetary value given to the product that is being sold, which the consumers have to pay for to obtain the product.
Place- Is the location of where the consumers can purchase the product, this can be via physical stores as well as virtual stores over the internet.
Promotion- Is the communication link between sellers and buyers for the purpose of influencing, informing, or persuading a potential buyer's purchasing decision. Promotion has four distinct elements which also need to be taken into consideration :
  1. Advertising
  2. Public Relations
  3. Personal Selling
  4. Sales Promotion
The product that we are trying to get across to a wide audience is our teaser trailer 'Devil's Orphan'. Our product can be viewed many ways for example, through 'Youtube' and 'Facebook'.

Example 1 - Teaser trailer made available on Youtube for a wide audience to view.

Example 2 - Our teaser trailer has been made available to watch on Facebook, using Beatrice's account.
Once the audience have viewed the teaser trailer, it will be likely that some of them would want to go out and watch the full movie. If we were distributing our films in cinemas then we would distribute to cheaper cinemas, simply because of the fact that we are a new and small production company and we need to give the audience time to adjust to us and the styles of film that we produce. If were were to distribute our films to prestigious cinemas such as Odeon and Apollo, then we would make a loss in profit if viewers didn't enjoy the film. We would distribute our film to Cinema's such as Cineworld Cinemas and Peckham Multiplex, with ticket prices ranging at £3.00- 4.50.

Example 3 - Cineworld Cinemas

Example 4 - Peckham Multiplex Cinema

We would make use of cross media and technological convergence, for example our audience would be able to experience 'Devils Orphan' through various platforms such as DVD, Blu-Ray, Cinema, I-Pod, Laptop, TV, the internet, X-box and I-Tunes. We would only be able to this once we've been established and start to make a massive profit which would allow us to use these forms of promotional strategies.
Examples 5-8 showing the logo's of the platforms that we would use to make available for audiences to watch our movie on. Our movie would be purchased online in I-Tunes for around £6-7.

In terms of promoting our product we would use many different ways to do this to increase awareness of the film and sales:

  • Advertising- promoting through London transport. This would be very effective as a heavy percentage of the public make use of public transport and as London is also a big city. We would put up our poster in train and tube stations, bus' and bus shelters, DLR stations etc.

Example 9 - This image shows our horror poster being advertised in London bus shelters.

  • Public Relations- In terms of public relations we would be able to promote our teaser trailer in many ways for example through press releases which includes announcing our upcoming film through
